Crude storage tank design — types, capacities and standards
A crude storage tank at a refinery or crude oil terminal is among the largest atmospheric vessels in any industrial facility. Diameters range from 30 m for small receipt tanks to 110 m for strategic crude reserves. HAIL designs and builds every major crude storage tank configuration:
- External Floating Roof (EFR) — the most common crude storage tank type for large-diameter applications. Single-deck pontoon roof floats on the crude surface, reducing vapour space to near zero. Primary and secondary seals per API 650 Appendix C. Typical capacities: 20,000 KL to 1,50,000 KL.
- Double Deck Floating Roof (DDFR) — used on very large crude storage tanks (60 m+ diameter) where additional roof rigidity and wind stability are required. Upper and lower deck compartments provide buoyancy reserve. 25-year design life with lower seal maintenance.
- Internal Floating Roof (IFR) — aluminium honeycomb or skin-and-pontoon deck inside a fixed-roof shell. Used for crude oil with high H2S content or in regions with heavy rainfall where an EFR seal zone would be compromised.
- Cone Roof with heating — used for heavy crude, bitumen-cut crude and heated crude receipt where the pour point exceeds ambient temperature. Steam-coil or hot-oil heating system installed on the tank bottom.
Shell plate thickness for a typical 70,000 KL crude storage tank ranges from 32 mm at the bottom course to 14 mm at the top course (SA 516 Gr. 70). Annular plates are 12-14 mm with full-penetration butt welds and 100% radiography. Bottom sketch plates are 8 mm with vacuum-box testing on every lap weld. Foundation is RCC ring-wall with M30 concrete, 28-day cure and elevation survey before handover.
