Refinery-grade piping with single-source accountability
Industrial piping is where every other discipline lives or dies. A single bad weld, missing PMI report or untested valve will bottle-neck the entire commissioning. As a proven refinery piping contractor, HAIL takes single-point accountability for piping from spool fabrication to first flow: isometric review, pipe procurement to MTC, shop fabrication at our Kalol workshop, field erection, qualified welders, 100% radiography on critical joints, hydrotest, flushing, chemical cleaning and pre-commissioning support. Our high pressure piping crews have delivered zero-leak commissioning inside IOCL Gujarat refinery for Thyssenkrupp's N-Butanol project under the strictest live-refinery safety regime.

Materials we work in
As a process piping contractor India serving the full range of refinery, petrochemical, and fertiliser applications, HAIL fabricates and erects piping in the following materials:
- Carbon steel: A106 Gr.B, A53, A333 Gr.6 (LTCS), A671/A672 for large-bore EFW pipe. The workhorse material for utility, offsite, and moderate-temperature process piping.
- Stainless steel: SS 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, and 347 for corrosive and high-temperature service. Full GTAW welding with argon purge on all stainless joints.
- Duplex and super duplex: 2205 and 2507 for high-chloride, high-pressure environments found in offshore feed gas, seawater cooling, and chemical plant service.
- Alloy steel: P11 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo), P22 (2.25Cr-1Mo), P91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) for high-temperature and high-pressure steam, reactor, and hydroprocessing piping. PWHT mandatory per ASME B31.3.
- Inconel, Hastelloy, and Monel: Exotic nickel alloys for severe corrosion and high-temperature applications in chemical and petrochemical plants.
- Lined piping: PTFE-lined, rubber-lined, and glass-lined carbon steel piping for aggressive chemical service where exotic solid metallurgy is not cost-effective.
- Non-metallic: HDPE, PVC, PP, GRE, and FRP piping for water treatment, effluent, and low-pressure chemical duties.
Piping categories and applications
HAIL's piping scope covers every category of industrial piping found in a process plant, from the high-pressure reactor loop to the last drain valve on the utility header:
- Process piping: High-pressure hydrocarbon, hydrogen, steam, and chemical piping within process battery limits. Designed and fabricated per ASME B31.3 with full PMI, radiography, and hydrotest documentation. This is the core scope of any high pressure piping contractor.
- Utility piping: Cooling water, demineralised water, plant air, instrument air, nitrogen, LP/MP/HP steam, condensate return, and fire water. Typically ASME B31.1 for steam and B31.3 for plant utilities.
- Offsite piping: Tank farm interconnecting piping, loading/unloading lines, flare headers, and product transfer lines connecting process units to storage and dispatch facilities.
- Underground piping: Buried hydrocarbon, water, and effluent pipelines with 3LPE (three-layer polyethylene) or FBE (fusion-bonded epoxy) external coating. As an experienced 3LPE piping contractor, HAIL applies FBE primer, adhesive layer, and PE topcoat with holiday testing at 25 kV, plus field joint coating with heat-shrink sleeves at every tie-in.
- Cross-country pipelines: Long-distance MS, GI, HDPE, and coated CS pipelines including survey, ROW clearing, excavation, pipe laying, welding per API 1104, coating, cathodic protection, hydrotest, and reinstatement. HAIL operates as a pipeline contractor Gujarat for water supply, hydrocarbon transfer, and industrial gas distribution.
Piping standards and codes
Every joint, support, and test we execute is governed by the applicable piping code. HAIL's engineering and QA teams maintain current editions and qualified procedures for all major standards:
- ASME B31.1: Power piping — steam, feedwater, and high-energy piping for power plants and boiler systems.
- ASME B31.3: Process piping — the primary code for refinery, petrochemical, and chemical plant piping. Covers design, materials, fabrication, examination, and testing.
- ASME B31.4: Pipeline transportation systems for liquids and slurries — applicable to cross-country hydrocarbon pipelines.
- ASME B31.8: Gas transmission and distribution piping systems — for cross-country natural gas and industrial gas pipelines.
- API 1104: Welding of pipelines and related facilities — the welding standard for cross-country pipeline construction.
- IS 5572 / IS 9595: Indian standards for classification of pipe flanges and piping systems.
- NACE MR0175: Materials for sour service (H2S-containing environments) — mandatory for refinery and upstream oil-gas piping.
- IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations): Statutory requirement for steam piping above specified pressure and temperature thresholds.
Hydrotesting, NDT, and pre-commissioning
Quality in piping is only proven at the test stage. HAIL's in-house NDT and testing capability eliminates dependency on external agencies and keeps the schedule under control:
- Hydrostatic testing: Each test package is isolated with spectacle blinds, filled with treated water, pressurised to 1.5x design pressure per ASME B31.3, and held for a minimum 4 hours. Pressure is recorded on calibrated chart recorders. Pneumatic testing is applied where water cannot be tolerated (instrument air lines, certain process systems).
- Radiography (RT): 100% radiographic examination on all high-pressure hydrocarbon and alloy butt welds; 10% random RT on utility and low-risk piping per line class specification.
- Ultrasonic testing (UT): Applied on thick-wall piping, weldolets, and branch connections where radiography access is limited.
- Dye penetrant testing (DPT/PT): Surface examination on socket welds, fillet welds, and branch connections. 100% DPT on all SS and alloy socket welds.
- Magnetic particle testing (MT): Surface and near-surface defect detection on ferromagnetic materials, particularly on Cr-Mo alloy piping after PWHT.
- PMI (Positive Material Identification): XRF testing on every alloy weld joint, fitting, and pipe spool to verify correct metallurgy. No alloy piping is released for erection without PMI clearance.
- Valve installation and testing: Gate, globe, ball, butterfly, check, and control valves are bench-tested, installed per the valve data sheet orientation, and seat-leak tested before system hydrotest.
- Pigging: For cross-country pipelines, cleaning and gauging pigs are run to verify internal cleanliness and confirm no dents, buckles, or construction debris remain in the line before commissioning.
- Chemical cleaning and flushing: Lube oil and hydraulic piping receives chemical cleaning to NAS 1638 Class 6 or equivalent cleanliness. Process piping is flushed with high-velocity water, followed by air blow-down and drying.
